When Should Baby Have Their First Dental Visit? San Antonio, TX

New parents have many firsts to look forward to with their new child. The first smile, first bath and first tooth. Once the milestone of the first tooth arrives, there is another first to consider – baby’s first dental visit. Here is what you need to know about infant dental care and when your child should begin making visits to a pediatric dentist.

Baby’s First Teeth

The central incisors on the bottom and top of the mouth are the first teeth to arrive for most infants. The lower front teeth usually are the first to emerge at about 6-10 months, and the top teeth come through next at 8-12 months. Once one tooth comes through, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Association both agree that children should have their first dental visit. The recommendation for first dental visits for babies is by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth.

What to Expect At Baby’s First Dental Visit

The goal of the first dental visit is to ensure that your child’s teeth are emerging correctly and there is no sign of abnormalities. The exam is not invasive or uncomfortable for your child – a pediatric dentist knows how to perform the exam without causing infants any distress. This is a good time for parents to learn more about how to care for their child’s teeth, including brushing these tiny baby teeth to keep them clean. If needed, the baby teeth may be cleaned during the first visit.

At Harlandale Kids Dental, we start seeing children as young as six months old for their first dental visits. Our pediatric dentist will carefully perform an exam to monitor the growth and emergence of new teeth and discuss any concerns with parents. We help new parents with oral care techniques and recommend preventive care for their child, usually checkups every six months to monitor baby’s teeth. Cleanings may also be added and other preventive care options to protect the primary teeth.

From the beginning, caring for your child’s beautiful smile is our top priority. If your child has received their first tooth, it’s time to schedule their first dental visit. Call us at Harlandale Kids Dental in San Antonio to schedule baby’s first visit at our pediatric dental center.
